This is the route we would build for our own families: land beneath Kilimanjaro, unwind in Moshi, cross the crater highlands, and finish with three nights on the plains of the central Serengeti. Every distance and drive time below is real — use it as-is, or hand it to your safari operator as the blueprint.
Day 1 · Arrive JRO → Moshi
Land at Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) and transfer 40 km — about one hour — to Salinero Kilimanjaro Hotel in Moshi's leafy Shanty Town. Swim off the flight in the outdoor pool, dine under the trees, and if the clouds allow, meet the mountain at sunset. Overnight: Salinero Kilimanjaro Hotel.
Day 2 · Moshi — coffee, waterfalls, mountain air
Ease into Tanzania: a Chaga coffee-plantation tour in the Kilimanjaro foothills, a waterfall walk, and the best people-watching in town from a café on Moshi's main street. This buffer day also protects the itinerary against long-haul delays. Overnight: Salinero Kilimanjaro Hotel.
Day 3 · West to the Ngorongoro highlands
A travel day with rewards: drive west with a game drive en route — Tarangire's giant elephant herds and baobabs, or Lake Manyara's tree-climbing lions. Sleep in the Karatu / Ngorongoro rim area; your operator will place you in a highlands lodge here (this is the one night outside the Salinero collection — we'd rather send you to the crater rim than pretend we're on it). Overnight: Ngorongoro highlands.
Day 4 · Ngorongoro Crater → Seronera
Descend 600 metres onto the crater floor at first light — the Big Five in a single morning is genuinely possible here. After a picnic lunch, drive on through the highlands and down onto the plains: 3–4 hours to Seronera, the beating heart of the Serengeti. Arrive as the light turns gold at Salinero Serengeti — canvas hybrid suites and an infinity pool looking out over the savannah, 12.7 km from Seronera Airstrip. Overnight: Salinero Serengeti.

Day 5 · Central Serengeti, all day
Dawn game drive while the cats are still working, bush breakfast on the plains, siesta at the pool with giraffe on the horizon, and an afternoon circuit along the Seronera River. The valley's rivers keep resident lion, leopard and cheetah here in every month of the year — this is why the itinerary anchors in the centre rather than chasing the herds. Overnight: Salinero Serengeti.
Day 6 · Balloon at dawn, rivers by day, fire by night
The optional hot-air balloon safari lifts off before sunrise and drifts over waking herds — book it for this morning so weather on day 5 gives you a fallback. Land to a champagne bush breakfast, then more river circuits or simply be still: daybed, binoculars (provided in every tent), the plains doing what they have always done. Bonfire and a Chilean red after dark. Overnight: Salinero Serengeti.
Day 7 · Fly out from Seronera
A short drive to Seronera Airstrip (12.7 km) and a light-aircraft hop toward Arusha or JRO for your connection home — watching your week replay beneath the wing.
The 12-day version: add the mountain
Combining Kilimanjaro with this safari is the classic Tanzanian double. Climb first — the Machame route, 6–7 days — sleeping before and after the climb at Salinero Millie Lodge, 100 metres from the Machame Gate at 1,800 m (the closest lodge to the trailhead, and the altitude head-start matters). Then let this 7-day safari be your recovery. One brand, three properties, zero logistics friction: Moshi → the Gate → the summit → the Serengeti.
When to take this itinerary
- June–October: classic dry season — concentrated wildlife, cool nights.
- Mid-April–June & November–December: the great migration passes directly through the central Serengeti.
- late January–March: calving season on the southern plains — an easy day-trip from Seronera.
- Any month: Seronera's resident big cats don't migrate. The itinerary never has a bad week.
